Eligibility

MEA applications are open to CAPH member executive administrators, quality improvement staff, medical directors, ambulatory care clinic leadership and department leaders.

Categories

  • Process Improvement: This award will honor improvements in efficiency and operational flow in both inpatient and ambulatory care settings. Advances in technology, patient scheduling, and other improvements that have proven to save time and energy for staff and patients are good entries in this category. Data to show the success of these improvements must be included with your entry.

Examples of improvements that would fit this category: a new refills-by-phone system or other simplified pharmacy protocol; an improved scheduling system for surgery or outpatient clinic visits; computerized physician order entry; emergency department process improvements; other improvements in patient and/or information flow.

  • Clinical Quality Improvement: Entries in this category should describe changes you have implemented to achieve improved outcomes in patient care. Outcomes data must reflect improvement as the result of the changes made.

Examples of work that would fit this category include improvements in patient safety, critical care, and surgery outcomes.

  • Chronic Disease Management: There has been an incredible amount of work nationally to improve the care and treatment outcomes of patients with chronic conditions. What has your system been doing that is exciting and is showing results?
  • Healthcare Disparities: We want to recognize your efforts to decrease differences in health care delivery based on racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic factors. Let us know what you have done to improve language access and cultural competence in your system. Please note: The SNI-related Health Care Interpreters Network project is not eligible for this award.

Judging Criteria

Scoring of entries will be based on three categories, each with equal weight.

Challenge:

How big is the problem addressed by your new idea? What was/is the toughness of the problem?

Solution:

How well and how completely does your hospital’s improvement answer the Challenge?

Creativity:

How unique is your Solution to the Challenge? Can your smart Solution help other CAPH systems?
